Chapter 5 - THE PETITION

The papers arrived before sunrise.

A process server handed them to Lucas on the front porch while Hannah sat inside holding Sophie against her chest.

Evelyn had filed an emergency petition alleging that Hannah was experiencing a severe postpartum psychiatric crisis and that Lucas had become violent while trying to conceal it.

The petition included screenshots of the fake messages.

It included a written statement from Evelyn.

And it included something worse.

A letter signed by Dr. Peter Sloan, a psychiatrist Lucas recognized from his mother’s country club.

Based on information presented to me, Hannah Mercer may present an immediate risk to herself and her infant.

Lucas read it twice.

“He’s never treated me,” Hannah said.

“I know.”

“He’s never even spoken to me.”

“I know.”

Their attorney, Priya Shah, arrived at seven with coffee and a legal pad.

“This letter is irresponsible,” she said. “But emergency family court can move fast when a baby is involved.”

Hannah’s face went pale.

“Can they take Sophie?”

“Not based on this alone. But we need to answer immediately.”

Lucas handed Priya the notebook, the hospital report, and the information about the tablet.

Priya’s eyes sharpened.

“This is no longer a family argument.”

“No,” Lucas said. “It’s an attack.”

At nine, a child welfare investigator named Marisol Grant arrived. She inspected the house, the nursery, the formula, the sleeping arrangements, and Sophie’s medical records.

Hannah answered every question even when her voice shook.

Then Marisol asked, “Mrs. Mercer, have you ever said you wanted your baby to disappear?”

“No.”

“Have you ever left her unattended while taking medication?”

“No.”

“Have you ever shaken her?”

Hannah’s face crumpled.

“No.”

Lucas stepped forward, but Priya raised one hand.

Let her answer.

Marisol closed the folder.

“There’s one issue I need clarified.”

She slid a document onto the table.

It was a hospital intake form from two weeks earlier.

Hannah’s name was on it.

So was her signature.

The form said she had voluntarily reported thoughts of harming Sophie.

Hannah stared at the signature.

“That is not mine.”
