Chapter 19 - THE SENTENCE

The courtroom was silent after Hannah sat down.
Lucas did not look at Evelyn.
The judge did.
He described the case as a sustained pattern of coercion, deception, physical violence, forgery, and interference with a young family’s safety.
Evelyn received a custodial sentence followed by supervised probation, mandatory treatment, and a long-term protective order barring contact with Hannah and Sophie.
Warren received a separate plea disposition for his role in the forged records and attempted financial transfer.
Dr. Sloan faced professional discipline.
Rebecca accepted responsibility for stalking and intimidation.
Denise cooperated and testified.
It did not erase the nursery night, but it ended the question of whether Hannah had imagined it.
Outside court, reporters waited near the steps because the Mercer Foundation name had attracted attention.
Lucas walked past them without speaking.
Hannah stopped once.
A reporter called, “Mrs. Mercer, do you feel vindicated?”
Hannah looked at Sophie sleeping against Lucas’s chest.
“No,” she said. “I feel tired.”
Then she added, “But I feel believed.”
At home, they removed the decorative clock from the bedroom.
They changed every lock again.
They moved the crib away from the wall Evelyn had once stood beside.
Healing, Hannah discovered, was mostly ordinary.
Therapy on Tuesdays.
Walks after dinner.
Letting Sophie cry for thirty seconds without panic.
Sleeping with the monitor on and trusting the silence.
One evening, Lucas found Hannah standing in the nursery doorway.
“What?” he asked.
She smiled faintly.
“I just realized I walked in here without being scared.”
Lucas smiled too.
Then his phone buzzed.
A message from Priya.
The foundation had finished its independent investigation.
