Chapter 15 - THE EMPTY VAULT

The server room looked untouched. The racks hummed, lights blinked, and air-conditioning whispered through the floor. But the backup drives holding years of financial records were missing.
"Who had access?" Ortiz asked the building manager.
"Caleb, Graham, and my team. But the override was activated by an outside maintenance badge."
Adrian closed his eyes for a moment. The same kind of badge had let someone reach his car.
Nora contacted the company's off-site accountant, June Park. June had quietly kept encrypted copies of the original Crescent Harbor budgets because the numbers on Graham's monthly reports kept changing.
"I thought I was making mistakes," June told them. "He kept telling me I was too young to understand the big picture."
She brought her laptop to the police station and walked Ortiz through the transfers. Three million dollars had moved into Bellweather-linked accounts under fake consulting invoices. The records identified Graham's authorization code and a second recipient connected to Vanessa's brother.
"Why didn't you report it sooner?" Ortiz asked.
June stared at the table. "I did. To Graham. He said if I spoke up, no company in Chicago would hire me again."
Adrian had heard that kind of threat before. It had been hiding in the language of leadership, disguised as advice.
Outside the station, Emma waited with Ruth and a tenants' attorney. She had brought letters from families who would lose their homes if Graham's forged papers were accepted. One was from a fourth grader who had drawn the courtyard where his friends played.
Adrian read it twice. He had spent months counting his own losses and had almost missed what the people around him stood to lose.
June's phone rang. She glanced at the number and went pale.

"It's Graham," she whispered. "He says he's at Crescent Harbor."
In the background of the call, someone was shouting for residents to get out.
