Chapter 19 - WHAT THE COMPANY OWED

The audit showed millions missing and more debt than Graham had admitted. Adrian spent two nights staring at numbers that seemed to erase his father's life's work. He wanted to write a check, put his name on every wall, and call it fixed.

Nora stopped him.

"You don't repair a company by hiding its problems behind your bank account," she said. "You repair it in the open."

Together with the board, Adrian proposed independent oversight, a public accounting of the missing funds, and a resident-led committee at Crescent Harbor. He sold his private vacation property to create a temporary housing reserve. Blackwood Development would rebuild slowly, and no one would pretend the damage had never happened.

At a community meeting, a man stood up holding his eviction notice.

"You own the company," he said. "Why should we trust another promise?"

"You shouldn't," Adrian answered. "Not by itself. That's why the agreement gives residents legal rights and oversight, not just my word. Read it with your lawyer. Change what doesn't protect you."

Ruth nodded once from the back of the room. It felt like more than applause.

The criminal cases moved through preliminary hearings. Vanessa and Graham pleaded not guilty, and their lawyers challenged the evidence. Owen admitted his role as part of a negotiated plea. Caleb's cooperation was reviewed separately. Adrian attended only when called; he no longer measured justice by how quickly someone else fell.

One Friday evening Emma met him outside the center where she'd started a new job helping tenants navigate housing disputes. Her knee had healed, leaving a faint scar.

"I got offered a promotion," she said. "Director of outreach. Different organization. No connection to you."

"That's good," Adrian said, meaning it.

"It is. And I need you to understand something."

He waited.

"I won't come back as your caretaker," Emma said.

"I wasn't going to ask."

"Then maybe, one day, you can ask me something else."
