Chapter 20 - THE MAN WHO STOOD BESIDE HER

Six months later, the Crescent Harbor courtyard smelled of fresh paint and grilled corn. Children chased each other around a new playground built where the broken parking lot used to be. Ruth sat with neighbors under a striped umbrella, arguing cheerfully about the best way to grow tomatoes in the community garden.

The company was smaller now. The books were open to independent auditors. The criminal cases were still moving through court, where they belonged. Adrian had learned that recovery and accountability didn't arrive all at once, wrapped up with a ribbon. They were work you did repeatedly, especially on the days when nobody was watching.

He crossed the courtyard with a cane. Some mornings he could walk without it. Some days the pain sent him back to his chair. Emma had never asked for a miracle. She had asked him to tell the truth.

He found her helping a little boy tape a handmade sign to the community-center door. The sign read WELCOME HOME. When the boy ran off, Emma smiled at Adrian.

"He spelled every letter himself," she said.

"Better handwriting than mine."

"That's a low bar."

They laughed, and the sound felt new. Not because everything was easy, but because it wasn't forced.

"How's the new job?" Adrian asked.

"Exhausting. Important. Mine."

"All good things."

She glanced at his cane. "Rough day?"

"A little. My therapist says taking breaks is allowed. I'm trying not to argue."

"Growth."

They sat together beneath a maple tree. For a while they watched the children play without reaching for old explanations. Then Adrian turned toward her.

"I wanted to ask you something. Not as your employer. Not as the man you saved. Just Adrian. Would you have dinner with me next Saturday?"

Emma took her time answering. She had every right to.

"Dinner sounds good," she said. "And if you ever hide something that important from me again, I'm leaving before dessert."

"Fair."

He offered his hand, not to be lifted and not to prove he could stand. Emma took it because she wanted to.

Seven months earlier, she had held on to stop him from falling. Today, they rose together, neither carrying the other's weight.

And this time, Adrian told her exactly where they were going.
