Chapter 15 - The Trap Around Me

The Easter assault was real.
Richard’s violence was real.
But someone had anticipated my response.
Calder Strategic knew I would activate the old satellite phone.
The phone’s handshake pinged a legacy network.
That network told them Michael Ward was back.
They had used my daughter’s suffering as a beacon.
“So they needed Dad to come out of hiding.”
Dana nodded.
“They couldn’t find Ben’s archive. They thought Michael could.”
Lily’s face went hard.
“Then we give them what they want.”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“You keep saying no before hearing the plan.”
“You’re my daughter.”
“And I’m the person Richard underestimated for three years.”
She had a point.
Her plan was simple.
Create a fake copy of the archive.
Leak that Lily had moved it back to North Ridge.
Force Calder and Evelyn’s remaining people to expose themselves trying to recover it.
I hated every part.
Dana loved it.
So did the prosecutors.
Lily said, “I don’t go underground. I stay in the command vehicle.”
We leaked the bait through Richard.
Lily spoke to him once by phone.
“You tell your mother I found Dad’s archive.”
Richard whispered, “Lily, I’m sorry.”
“Tell her.”
“I love you.”
She ended the call.
No speech.
No closure.
Just a click.
That night, surveillance watched North Ridge.
At 1:13 a.m., three vehicles entered through the old service road.
Evelyn Whitmore was in the first.
Dominic Rusk in the second.
Ethan Cole in the third.
Then a fourth vehicle arrived.
Police Chief Pike.
Already under federal restriction.
He had fled supervision.
Dana smiled without humor.
“Everybody came.”
Agents waited until the group entered the tunnel.
Then sealed both exits.
Inside, Evelyn found the fake archive case.
She opened it.
A tracker activated.
Dominic realized first.
“Trap.”
Pike drew his weapon.
Federal lights flooded the tunnel.
“DROP IT!”
For two seconds, nobody moved.
Then Ethan Cole raised both hands.
“I’ll cooperate.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“You coward.”
Cole looked at her.
“No, Evelyn. I’m the reason you’re here.”
She froze.
Cole had been feeding evidence to prosecutors for six weeks.
The third side had turned again.
Then Pike ran toward the emergency shaft.
Lily saw him on the command monitor.
“Where does that go?”
I looked at the old pipeline map.
May you like
My stomach dropped.
“Toward the safe house road.”
