Chapter 9 - Under North Ridge

North Ridge had never been farmland.

Not really.

County records showed an abandoned fuel pipeline running under the southern edge.

Decommissioned twenty years ago.

Except satellite imaging showed recent ground disturbance.

Dana brought in a federal environmental team under sealed authority.

They found a service hatch buried beneath brush.

New lock.

Old steel.

We opened it.

A ladder dropped into darkness.

We went down with protective gear and a six-person team.

One box held county election records.

Another held patient files from Bellhaven General.

Another held police reports marked VOID.

Lily opened one.

Domestic violence complaint.

Victim name redacted.

Suspect: Richard Whitmore.

Four years before he met Lily.

Disposition: unfounded.

Signed by Chief Pike.

Lily did not cry.

She became very still.

“How many?”

We found six complaints involving Richard.

All disappeared.

Then Dana called me over.

And a photograph of Caleb Voss.

Alive.

Taken last month.

The note beneath it said:

KEEP VOSS WORKING UNTIL TRANSFER.

Lily said, “Working on what?”

A laptop on the desk answered.

It held financial models for moving Whitmore debt through municipal redevelopment bonds.

Bellhaven taxpayers would carry private losses.

Same pattern as fifteen years ago.

Bigger scale.

Then footsteps echoed from the tunnel.

Dana killed the lights.

We heard someone at the steel door.

A man’s voice.

“Federal team, identify.”

Dana didn’t answer.

The door opened.

Flashlight beams swept inside.

Then Police Chief Pike stepped through wearing body armor.

Behind him were four Bellhaven deputies.

He smiled.

“Well, Michael.”

May you like

He raised his weapon.

“You always did have trouble staying retired.”
