Chapter 8 - Dana’s Secret

Dana had never told me she saw Ben before the crash.
She met him at a rest stop twenty miles from the bridge.
“He was scared,” she said.
“Ben wasn’t scared.”
“He was that night.”
He told her Ashbridge was compromised.
Ben believed Caleb Voss had discovered who.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because Ben made me promise not to.”
“He died two hours later.”
“I know.”
“You let me spend fifteen years thinking I missed something.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
I laughed without humor.
“People keep using that phrase around me.”
Then she told me the rest.
Ben gave her a sealed envelope.
Inside was one name.
She never opened it.
“Where is it?”
“Federal evidence storage.”
“Still sealed?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because the morning after Ben died, my supervisor ordered the entire Ashbridge chain locked under national-security review.”
“Who was your supervisor?”
Dana looked at me.
“Deputy Director Thomas Keene.”
I remembered him.
Polished.
Patient.
The man who told me leaving was best for Lily.
He had retired ten years ago.
With a federal pension.
Voss’s message made sense.
Dana called Washington.
The envelope was still in storage.
An emergency access order was requested.
While we waited, Lily sat at the table reading her own marriage file.
Page after page.
She finally said, “Richard knew I wanted kids.”
I looked at her.
“He kept delaying.”
Her eyes went wet.
“He said we needed a few years.”
Then she found a note in the investigator report.
SUBJECT PREGNANCY WOULD COMPLICATE ASSET CONTROL. ADVISE DELAY.
I watched my daughter realize even that part of her marriage had been managed.
She closed the laptop.
“I want him destroyed.”
I sat beside her.
“I understand.”
“No. Legally.”
That sounded like her mother.
Dana’s phone buzzed.
The evidence order came through.
A scanned image of Ben’s sealed note arrived.
Three words in his handwriting:
TRUST NO KEENE.
Then a second page.
A photograph.
Thomas Keene standing beside Harrison Whitmore and Police Chief Pike.
Taken twelve years before Richard ever met Lily.
On the back, Ben had written:
THEY OWN THE PIPELINE.
I said, “Pipeline?”
May you like
Lily looked at the North Ridge map.
“Maybe literally.”
