Chapter 20 - Easter Again

I said no.
Not because the work did not matter.
Because I finally understood that leaving the badge behind and leaving myself behind were two different things.
I could help without disappearing into it.
One year after Lily’s call, Easter came again.
We ate at my house.
Lily.
Ava.
Dana.
Two nurses from the clinic.
Noah, an old friend from the neighborhood.
And three women living temporarily at the North Ridge center.
Lily had built the first cottage in eight months.
She named the place Sarah House.
I pretended the sign did not make me cry.
The bruises were gone.
The fear took longer.
Some doors still made her flinch.
Some unknown numbers still froze her hand above the phone.
After dinner, Lily found the black case in my study.
“You keeping this?”
I looked inside.
Old credential.
Satellite phone.
Ben’s note.
Sarah’s letter.
Nothing else.
“No.”
I removed the notes.
Closed the case.
Then locked it in the attic.
Lily stood in the doorway.
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“Last Easter, when I called you…”
She stopped.
“What?”
“I thought you might not come.”
I walked over.
“Why?”
“Because he spent years telling me I was difficult. Dramatic. Too much.”
I took her hand.
“You call me from anywhere, at any hour, for any reason. I come.”
She smiled.
“Even if I just need groceries?”
“I’ll complain. Then I’ll come.”
She laughed.
Ava shouted from the yard.
“Grandpa!”
I looked out the window.
One small girl waving a yellow plastic egg like she had discovered gold.
Lily leaned against my shoulder.
The old satellite phone rang upstairs.
Once.
Then stopped.
I did not move.
Dana had my regular number now.
The world could reach me without dragging me backward.
Lily asked, “Aren’t you going to check it?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
I watched Ava run across the grass.
May you like
“Because the people who need me are already here.”
And this time, when Easter ended, everyone I loved went home safe.
