Chapter 12 - The Memory CardThe memory card contained video from Grant’s office.

Security footage.

No audio.

Dates spanning two years.

Why was it in Margaret’s delivery?

Harris traced the card.

It belonged to Grant’s former assistant, Melissa Ward.

She contacted Nathan through Rachel the next morning.

“I put it in the bracelet box.”

“Why?”

“Because Margaret asked me to send the gift.”

Melissa had worked for Grant for nine years.

She quit after police searched the office.

She had copied footage months earlier because she feared being blamed for irregular documents.

On one clip, Margaret entered Grant’s office carrying Nathan’s signed company approvals.

Grant scanned them.

On another, Susan Bell notarized a stack of papers.

On a third, Eric delivered the DNA kit.

Then Melissa showed them one more clip.

Margaret and Grant arguing.

No audio.

But Margaret shoved a file toward him.

Grant pointed at the door.

Margaret pointed at her phone.

The timestamp was the night of the nursery assault.

“What were they arguing about?” Nathan asked.

Melissa looked ashamed.

“I heard part of it from the hallway.”

Claire leaned forward.

Melissa said:

“Grant told Margaret to stop. He said the paternity report was enough. He did not want her touching Claire.”

Nathan blinked.

Grant had helped build the fraud.

But even he had not expected Margaret to become violent.

Melissa continued.

“Margaret said Claire had found the guardianship petition. She said Claire was going to destroy everything.”

Claire closed her eyes.

So Margaret went home.

Found her in the nursery.

Demanded the papers.

Claire refused.

Then Nathan walked in.

The violence had not started because Claire stole.

It started because she would not surrender evidence.

Then Melissa handed over a printed email.

From Margaret to Grant:

If Claire won’t sign, I’ll make Nathan believe she is dangerous.

Grant replied:

Do not improvise.

Margaret answered:

You worry too much.

Nathan stared at the words.

Then Rachel received a new filing.

Margaret had petitioned to dissolve Sophie’s trust interest.

Even from jail, she was still trying.

And this time, she attached a sworn affidavit from someone Nathan trusted.

His own uncle, Robert.
