Chapter 14 - William’s LedgerThe ledger connected everything.

Vendor payments.
Fake invoices.
Dates.
Approvals.
Notes in William’s handwriting.
Margaret approved fourteen suspicious payments.
Grant created the vendor contracts.
Robert pushed board renewals.
Susan notarized amended agreements.
Nathan’s signature appeared only on summary pages.
William underlined one phrase:
Nathan does not know.
Claire sat beside him while Rachel photographed every page.
Then they reached the final section.
William had discovered the stolen-identity company.
He planned to expose it at the next board meeting.
He died ten days before that meeting.
Nathan stared at the date.
Harris spoke carefully.
“There is no evidence his death was anything other than a heart attack.”
Nathan nodded.
William anticipated that if he died, the scheme would continue.
So he created Sophie’s beneficiary trigger.
The new child’s shares would force a trust audit.
The audit would expose vendor activity.
Unless someone removed the child.
Fake paternity.
Guardianship.
Maternal instability.
Everything came back to the same goal.
Keep the audit from gaining teeth.
Then James revealed why he had waited.
William did not trust the board.
He told James:
“When they start accusing Nathan’s child, you’ll know they’re scared.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
His father had predicted it.
Then James handed him a sealed envelope.
“For Claire.”
Claire looked surprised.
She opened it.
William had written the note before he ever met Sophie.
Claire,
If you are reading this, you may be the only person in the room who has no reason to protect the Brooks name.
Please protect the child instead.
Claire began crying.
Nathan looked away.
His father trusted Claire more than his own family.
Then Harris called.
Grant had agreed to cooperate.
He wanted a deal.
His first statement:
Margaret did not start the fraud.
May you like
Robert did.
And William had confronted him years ago.
