Chapter 19 - The Letter He Finally ReadTwo years after the nursery night, Margaret sent one final letter through her attorney.

This time Nathan opened it.

Claire chose not to.

The first line surprised him.

I was wrong.

No explanation followed immediately.

Margaret wrote that prison had stripped away the audience she always performed for.

No board.

No family dinners.

No people calling her Mrs. Brooks.

She admitted she had confused being needed with being loved.

She admitted Claire frightened her because Claire did not need the Brooks name.

Then:

When Sophie was born, I saw the company moving into a future where I was not the center. I told myself I was protecting what your father built. I was protecting my place in it.

Nathan stopped.

That was the first honest thing she had said.

Margaret apologized for attacking Claire.

For using Sophie.

For weaponizing Nathan’s trust.

She did not ask to visit.

Did not ask to be forgiven.

At the end:

If Sophie ever asks about me, tell her I was her grandmother. Tell her I loved her badly. Do not tell her bad love is enough.

Nathan folded the letter.

He cried.

Claire found him at the kitchen table.

“Was it awful?”

“No.”

“Good?”

“No.”

“What then?”

“True.”

He gave Claire the choice to read it.

She declined.

“That truth is for you.”

They put the letter in a sealed family file.

Not Sophie’s nursery.

Not a shrine.

Just history.

Later that week, Nathan brought Sophie to the company office for the first time.

She ran through the lobby in light-up sneakers.

Employees smiled.

No one bowed.

No one whispered about heirs.

Nathan carried her into the boardroom.

Not during a meeting.

Just an empty room.

He pointed to his father’s portrait.

“That’s Grandpa William.”

Sophie waved.

Then she pointed to Nathan’s chair.

“Daddy sit?”

Nathan smiled.

“Sometimes.”

She climbed into it.

Too small.

Feet nowhere near the floor.

Then she said:

“My chair.”

Nathan laughed.

Maybe one day.

Maybe never.

That choice would be hers.

Then his phone buzzed.

Claire.

Come home early. Sophie’s got a surprise for you.

He looked at the clock.

May you like

4:18 p.m.

For once, the board could wait.
