Chapter 1 - The Girl Running Barefoot

Maya hit the marble floor so hard her little knees buckled, but she did not stop running.

Richard Sterling had been fixing his bow tie when he heard the slap of bare feet in the upstairs hall. He stepped out of his dressing room just as his two-year-old daughter appeared at the far end of the corridor.

Her pink party dress was twisted around one shoulder. Her hair bow hung loose. Tears covered her face.

And behind her came Victoria.

Not running. Walking.

Slowly.

“Maya?” Richard dropped to one knee.

The child crashed into him and buried her face against his chest. Her tiny hands locked around his tuxedo jacket.

“Daddy,” she gasped. “No Toria. No dark.”

Richard froze.

Victoria stopped several feet away in a wine-red evening gown, one hand pressed dramatically to her chest. “Richard, thank God. She had another tantrum in the nursery. I tried to calm her down, but she just lost control.”

Maya began shaking harder the second Victoria spoke.

Richard held her close. “What happened?”

“Nothing happened,” Victoria said. Her voice was soft, hurt, almost fragile. “That’s the problem. I was adjusting her sash. She started screaming like I’d hurt her.”

Richard looked down at his daughter.

That was when he saw the mark.

A narrow red line circled Maya’s left wrist, too straight to look like a scrape from a toy.

“What’s this?” he asked.

Victoria’s expression did not change. “She fought me when I tried to stop her from climbing onto the window bench.”

Maya turned her face toward Richard’s neck.

“No chair,” she whispered.

Richard’s eyes lifted.

“What did she say?”

Victoria gave a nervous laugh. “She’s two, Richard. Half the time she says things that don’t make sense.”

Downstairs, the first notes of the orchestra floated up from the ballroom. One hundred guests were waiting for Richard Sterling and his beautiful wife to make their entrance.

But Richard barely heard the music.

Maya had started pointing toward the nursery.

Then she whispered two words that made the skin on his arms rise.

“Camera sleep.”
