Chapter 18 - Eleanor’s Letter

Richard found the envelope behind Eleanor’s memorial plaque exactly where Victoria said it would be.

His hands shook before he opened it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Richard,

If you ever read this, something has gone wrong badly enough that I was right to be afraid.

He sat alone in the chapel and kept reading.

Eleanor had noticed strange access requests months before Maya’s birth. Someone inside Sterling Enterprises had repeatedly opened family insurance files, residential blueprints, and private schedules.

She reported it to Graham Pike.

Graham told her it was a software error.

She did not believe him.

So she began keeping records.

The letter named dates, login IDs, and one employee badge connected to unauthorized access.

G. PIKE.

Richard closed his eyes.

Eleanor had seen him.

Years before Richard did.

The final paragraph destroyed him.

You trust people because you are always moving toward the next problem. I love that about you, but I am afraid it makes you miss what is happening quietly beside you. If Maya ever seems afraid, believe her before you believe the explanation.

Richard bowed his head.

He had failed the simplest instruction she had ever left him.

Believe her.

Daniel entered the chapel and waited silently.

Richard handed him the letter.

“This proves Graham was inside our private systems before Victoria ever came along.”

“It helps prove premeditation,” Daniel said.

Richard looked at Eleanor’s plaque.

“Can we prove everything?”

Daniel nodded slowly. “The hard drive from the carriage house is readable.”

“What’s on it?”

“Payroll. Forged medical records. Messages between Graham and Victoria. The staged theft against Nicole. Threats against Helen.”

Richard exhaled.

Then Daniel added, “And one video you need to see.”

Richard’s stomach tightened.

“What video?”

“Three months ago. Nursery hallway.”

May you like

Daniel hesitated.

“Maya tried to tell you.”
