Chapter 19 - The Day He Walked Past

The video lasted forty-three seconds.
Richard almost could not watch it.
He was on screen.
Three months earlier.
Walking down the nursery hall with his phone against his ear.
Maya ran after him in pajamas.
“Daddy! Daddy!”
Richard remembered the day.
A port strike had shut down two distribution centers. He had been negotiating with attorneys, suppliers, and union representatives all morning.
On the video, Maya grabbed his pant leg.
Richard bent down, kissed her forehead, and gently handed her to Victoria.
Then he walked away.
Maya reached for him.
Victoria smiled until Richard disappeared around the corner.
Then her face changed.
She carried Maya back into the nursery.
Richard shut the laptop.
“I walked right past it.”
Daniel said nothing.
“I was there.”
“You didn’t know.”
“I didn’t look.”
That distinction mattered to Richard.
He could spend the rest of his life blaming Victoria and Graham, and they deserved every consequence coming to them.
But he also needed to change the part of himself that had made their manipulation possible.
Three days later, prosecutors charged Graham with kidnapping, fraud, conspiracy, evidence destruction, extortion, and multiple offenses connected to forged medical and financial records.
Victoria accepted responsibility for her role and agreed to cooperate fully.
Richard filed for divorce.
Nicole Ramsey’s record was formally cleared, and Sterling Enterprises funded an independent legal review of every case Graham had touched.
Helen Gable returned only once to the estate.
She knelt beside Maya and opened her arms.
Maya ran to her.
Richard watched from the doorway.
Helen looked up at him.
“She tried to tell us in the only ways she knew how.”
Richard nodded.
“I know.”
That evening, workers began removing cameras from Maya’s private bedroom.
Richard kept security in the halls and entrances.
But he no longer wanted his daughter growing up inside a surveillance system.
He wanted her growing up inside a relationship.
As he tucked her into bed, Maya touched his cheek.
“No dark?”
Richard kissed her hand.
“No dark.”
May you like
Then she asked the question he had feared.
“Toria come back?”
