Chapter 16 - The Duplicate

Graham’s eyes changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

“What did you do?”

Victoria’s voice stayed calm. “I stopped trusting you months ago.”

Richard stared at the phone.

“You made copies?”

“Not copies. I moved the originals.”

“Where?”

Victoria hesitated.

“At the hospital chapel. Behind the memorial plaque for Eleanor.”

Richard nearly laughed from disbelief.

“You hid stolen legal documents behind my dead wife’s memorial?”

“I needed somewhere Graham would never look.”

On the roof, Graham lunged toward the stairwell.

Police moved in.

He swung the document case at one detective and shoved another into the wall.

Daniel tackled him before he reached the door.

The case skidded across the concrete and burst open.

Blank paper scattered into the wind.

Graham had carried a decoy.

He had known the originals were gone.

He had come to the tower for something else.

Daniel pinned him down.

A detective snapped cuffs around his wrists.

Graham looked up at Richard and smiled through blood from a split lip.

“You still don’t get it.”

“What?”

“The trust wasn’t the endgame.”

Richard’s heart sank.

Graham nodded toward the office below.

“Check your pending wire transfers.”

Richard ran back downstairs.

His secure terminal showed three transfers queued for 9:00 a.m.

Total: eighty-four million dollars.

Destination accounts were hidden behind shell companies.

Authorization required two signatures.

One was Graham Pike’s administrator credential.

The other had already been approved.

By Victoria Sterling.

Richard stared at the screen.

On speakerphone, Victoria said nothing.

“Tell me you didn’t,” he whispered.

Her silence was the answer.
