Vanessa waited until I left the room before lifting an entire tray of pasta over my six-year-old daughter.
She dumped everything over Sofia’s head.
“That table is for real family.”
Sofia cried beneath the cream-covered curls.
“Daddy said I belong here!”
When I returned, more than thirty guests were watching my daughter sit on the floor.
Nobody had helped her.
“Who touched my child?”
Vanessa smiled.
“She needed to learn her place.”
I knelt and wiped Sofia’s face.
“Did she hurt you?”
“She destroyed Mommy’s letter.”
Marco grabbed me from behind.
“Walk away, boss.”
I drove my elbow into his ribs and slammed him across the dining table.
When a second guard charged with a chair, I kicked it aside and threw him through a wooden display shelf.
Vanessa ran toward the exit carrying a torn envelope.
I blocked her.
“Put my wife’s letter on the table.”
Her smile disappeared.
“You weren’t supposed to know she was alive.”
Then Sofia pointed toward the basement.
“Daddy, Vanessa locked Mommy downstairs.”
