Chapter 13 - The House Where We Learned Silence

I did not go alone.

I told Claire the address and entered five minutes before her team.

The old Rossi house had been empty since my father died.

Anthony sat in the living room with the trust binder on his lap.

“You always did bring backup,” he said.

“You always did confuse secrecy with intelligence.”

He smiled.

“That sounds like Elena.”

“Don’t say her name.”

Anthony opened the binder.

“Dad built everything with dirty money. You want to burn me for continuing what he started?”

“You kidnapped my wife.”

“I didn’t touch her.”

“You ordered it.”

“I tried to protect the company.”

I laughed.

“There it is. The family excuse.”

Anthony stood.

“You know what happens if those files go public? Investigations. lawsuits. Contracts canceled. Thousands of people lose jobs because Elena needed to be righteous.”

“No. People lose jobs because you stole sixty-eight million dollars and thought fear was cheaper than accountability.”

His jaw tightened.

“You sound so clean.”

“I’m not.”

That surprised him.

“I ignored warnings. I trusted names instead of evidence. I let grief make me passive. But I’m done turning my mistakes into permission for yours.”

Anthony’s hand moved behind his back.

I saw the gun before he raised it.

Claire shouted from the hallway.

“Drop it!”

Anthony grabbed the binder and ran through the kitchen.

I followed.

He reached the garage and threw the binder into a metal trash can already burning.

I tackled him before he could reach the back door.

We hit the concrete hard.

Police pulled us apart.

Claire stomped out the fire.

Half the binder was damaged.

But one sealed envelope survived.

It was addressed in my father’s handwriting.

TO VINCENT - ONLY IF ANTHONY BECOMES DANGEROUS.
