Chapter 5 - The Detective Who Closed Her Case

Nobody moved.

Shaw reached for the laptop.

Theo pulled it away.

I stepped in front of him.

“You carried my wife into my house.”

Shaw’s hand drifted toward his gun.

Two uniformed officers noticed.

So did I.

“Careful,” I said. “There are thirty witnesses.”

Vanessa whispered, “Daniel, don’t.”

First name.

Not Detective Shaw.

Daniel.

Shaw looked at her with pure fury.

“You said the backup was disabled.”

That sentence ended everything.

One of the younger officers slowly moved away from him.

“Detective, I need you to place your weapon on the table.”

Shaw laughed.

“You have no idea what you’re stepping into.”

“Gun. Table. Now.”

Shaw complied.

Then he pointed at me.

“He’s the reason any of this happened.”

I almost hit him.

Instead I asked, “Where is Elena?”

He stared at me.

“Gone.”

Vanessa snapped, “Shut up.”

Shaw smiled at her.

“Oh, now you want silence?”

The conspiracy was cracking in front of us.

Police separated everyone.

I stayed with Sofia while detectives from another precinct arrived.

At two in the morning, a state investigator named Claire Benton sat across from me.

“Your wife’s accident report has problems.”

“What kind?”

“No skid marks. No blood in the vehicle. Driver’s seat was pushed too far back for her height.”

I felt sick.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

“Shaw controlled the case.”

Claire slid over another page.

“Your wife called 911 eleven minutes before her car entered the river.”

I had never heard about the call.

“What did she say?”

Claire pressed play.

Elena’s voice filled the room, breathless and terrified.

“Vincent, if they tell you I drove off that bridge, they’re lying. Anthony found the Harbor files. He knows I copied everything.”

A crash sounded.

Then a man’s voice.

May you like

My brother’s voice.

“Elena, give me the drive.”
