Chapter 14 - The Hearing

On Tuesday morning we entered a DuPage County courtroom through separate doors. Elena held Lily's hand until a family advocate escorted our daughter to a quiet room away from the hearing. No one was going to make her sit through adults arguing over her fear.
Vanessa did not appear. Her attorney said he had spoken to her but did not know her present address. He challenged several allegations and asked the judge not to treat an unproven criminal case as a custody decision.
Mara stood. "We're not asking the court to decide criminal guilt today. We're asking for immediate protections based on the evidence available."
She presented the school notices, the child's medical documentation, Elena's account of being restrained, and verified records showing that I had not signed the alleged admission of abuse.
The judge asked whether the forged guardianship application had ever resulted in an order.
"It did not," the clerk confirmed.
"Then nobody should be treating it as one," the judge said.
The court entered protective restrictions and scheduled further proceedings. Lily remained in the care of her biological parents under our existing arrangements and the temporary safety measures. The judge warned all parties not to bypass those orders.
Outside, reporters weren't waiting. There was no dramatic crowd. Just Elena, me, and a family advocate helping us plan how Lily could get through another night without being afraid of a door.
"I wish this meant it was over," Elena said.
"It means we can breathe," I answered. "That's something."
My phone rang. Mara had stepped aside to take a call from the trustee at Hartwell.
"Aaron," she said, returning quickly, "someone submitted an emergency request for ninety thousand dollars in Lily's name this morning."

The request claimed to be signed by Elena.
And it included a photograph of Lily taken that very week.
