Chapter 9 - The Box in the Garage

I didn't touch the box. I called Detective Park and waited on the front steps with Kayla, who had come to collect clothes with Marcus and a police escort.

The brass key opened a metal cash box on the highest shelf in my garage. Park had the items photographed as they were removed: a second phone, a prepaid debit card, two blank forms printed with a government-style seal, and an envelope labeled LILY.

Inside the envelope were two photographs of my daughter. One showed her entering kindergarten. The other showed her asleep in our living room.

There was also an itinerary for a drive to a rental property in southern Wisconsin. Departure: Saturday, 8:45 a.m. Driver: R. Salazar. Child: Lily Hayes.

"Yesterday," I said. "They meant to take her yesterday."

Park nodded. "Your early return may have interrupted the plan."

I stared at the pictures. Someone had studied my child's routines like a problem to solve.

On the second phone, investigators found a message thread about the proposed transfer. Mara later told me what had been preserved: Vanessa wanted Lily declared unable to remain with either biological parent. Ricardo promised to handle the paperwork and the transportation.

The messages didn't prove every part of the scheme, but they made the threat unmistakable.

"Why the hurry?" I asked Park.

"The loan. Maybe the trust. Maybe both. We don't know yet."

Then a message arrived on the second phone while it was in an evidence bag. Park read it without touching the screen.

FROM RICARDO: THEY FOUND WAVERLY. USE THE OTHER ADDRESS.

A second message followed.

DON'T CALL AARON. I'LL HANDLE THE GIRL.
