Chapter 15 - Ninety Thousand Reasons

Hartwell's trust officer, Ellen Ward, met us by video call. She was a calm woman with silver glasses and absolutely no patience for anyone calling fraud a family misunderstanding.
"Nothing was paid," she said. "We independently verify requests, and these documents failed that process."
The invoice came from Evergreen Family Center. It billed for residential behavioral care Lily had never received. A photograph showed Lily eating at Rosa's kitchen table. Someone had taken it through a window.
My skin went cold. "They know where she is."
"We'll send the location and the photograph to Park immediately," Mara said. "Rosa needs the updated security advice, too."
Ellen explained that the trust couldn't be emptied by presenting a guardianship form. The scammers needed a chain of approvals, false records, and people willing to skip checks. They had already failed at the first gate.
"Then what was the ninety thousand for?" I asked.
"An attempted theft," she answered. "The amount they thought they could justify with those fake services."
Grace from the bank had more news. The home-equity disbursement was blocked. Investigators were examining transfers from my joint account, including forty-six thousand dollars sent to a business controlled by Ricardo.
It was money Vanessa had moved in smaller amounts over several months. I'd never looked closely because I thought she was paying household contractors.
"I helped finance this," I said, sick with shame.
"You were deceived," Grace replied. "Now we document it and recover what we can."
That evening Park showed me a warrant return describing a voice recorder found in the first rental house. Ricardo had apparently used it to rehearse false statements with Vanessa.
One file was labeled AARON CONFESSION FINAL.

Park pressed play.
I heard a voice that sounded like mine say, "Lily would be better off if I never saw her again."
