Chapter 19 - The Words That Counted

"You don't need Vanessa to believe you," I told Lily. "We believe you. We should have listened sooner."
She touched my cheek with her small fingers.
"I was telling the truth."
"I know, honey."
That sentence became the center of our next eight months.
The criminal cases moved slowly. Investigators reviewed devices, bank records, medical reports, and the physical evidence from the pantry and the two rented houses. A court handled the charges; the family court handled the protective arrangements. Mara warned us not to treat either process as a substitute for Lily's recovery.
Ricardo eventually entered a plea connected to the attempted fraud, false documents, and the plan to unlawfully take Lily. Vanessa pleaded guilty to charges that included unlawful restraint, child endangerment, forgery, and conspiracy to commit fraud. The court imposed prison sentences, restitution obligations, and restrictions intended to keep Lily safe. The separate allegation about the car remained part of an ongoing investigation; I refused to claim a legal finding that had not been made.
I filed for divorce. Marcus secured a stable parenting arrangement for Brandon and Kayla, who were getting counseling of their own. Sometimes they visited Lily. They played board games, argued about crayons, and slowly learned that dinner wasn't a contest someone had to lose.
My employer cleared me after reviewing the forged complaint and the verified evidence. I returned on a shorter schedule. I hadn't lost the ability to earn money, but I'd lost my appetite for working while my daughter needed me at home.
One evening Lily asked to see the old house again. We'd been staying nearby while repairs and safety changes were made.
"There's one room I want to look at," she said.
Elena and I exchanged a glance.
"Which room?" I asked.
May you like
Lily took a breath.
"The pantry. But only if we can change it."
