Chapter 10 - MY BROTHER CAME BACK

Rios brought us through a side entrance. From an upstairs window, I watched the sedan pull away. Its plate had been covered with temporary paper.
Ethan sat across from me in an interview room. There was a little white line above his eyebrow where he’d cut himself climbing a tree at twelve. I had teased him for months. Now I wanted to cry just looking at it.
“Why didn't you call me?” I asked.
“I did. You hung up after I said my name.”
I remembered a strange call seven years ago. A man told me my father was lying. I had said never call again.
Ethan rubbed his hands together. “I moved money for Mercer before I knew it was stolen. I took envelopes. I ignored questions. Then a night janitor named Luis Ortega found the fake invoices. Two days later, the warehouse burned. Luis was blamed for starting it. He went to prison. I ran because Mercer said you were next.”
“You let an innocent man sit in prison.”
“Yes.” Ethan met my eyes. “I have to live with that. But I kept copies. I was trying to get enough proof to set him free.”
“Emily found you?”
“She found Luis first. Then me. She believed the janitor everyone else forgot.”
I thought of my wife spending evenings saying she was helping families with paperwork. I had kissed her goodbye without asking what kept her up.
Ethan swallowed. “The week before she died, we found a second ledger that traced every payment. She hid the only complete copy. Mercer learned she had it.”
“Are you saying he killed her?”
Ethan’s eyes filled. “I'm saying her brake line was cut at a garage owned by his partner.”

He slid a photograph across the table.
It showed Vanessa beside Emily’s car on the morning of the crash.
