Chapter 19 - THE WOMAN AT THE FUNERAL

Leonard's attorney negotiated a formal cooperation agreement. His testimony would need to be checked against phone records, payments, and the mechanic's findings, but what he described fit the trail Emily had left.

Mercer had wanted Emily frightened into dropping the investigation. Vanessa decided that wasn't enough. She arranged for a mechanic to damage the brake system, then had Leonard manipulate the insurance paperwork after the crash. Mercer paid to bury the financial evidence and the suspicious repair records. Whether he had known the full plan beforehand remained contested.

Vanessa had attended the funeral to check whether Emily had left anything behind. When Lily mentioned a special music box, Vanessa began offering to babysit. Every birthday cupcake, every ride to school, every comforting word had been another way inside our home.

Rios located Vanessa at a roadside motel using license-plate records and a payment made with one of Leonard’s cards. She was arrested without a chase. Officers seized the laptop from our house, and forensic specialists recovered deleted searches for Emily's bank box and messages about the brake job.

Mercer was detained days later after attempting to cross into Canada using another man's travel documents. Prosecutors charged him in connection with the fraud, intimidation, and evidence concealment; investigators continued examining his role in Emily’s death.

When I told Lily Vanessa could no longer enter our home, she asked, “Was she ever nice to me for real?”

I sat beside her on the rug.

“I don't know what she felt,” I said. “But kindness doesn't hurt you and tell you to keep it secret. You never have to earn safety from a grown-up.”

Lily leaned against me. “I miss Mommy.”

“Me too. Every day.”

She held my hand a long time. Then she asked the question I'd been avoiding since I heard Emily's voice on the recorder.

“Daddy, if Mommy knew they were bad people, why didn't she tell us?”

I looked at the letter Emily had left me.

This time, I wasn't going to answer with another family lie.
