Chapter 16 - THE CALL FROM THE FERRY WAREHOUSE

I drove to Ruth’s house with Rios on speakerphone. Her front door stood open. A broken teacup lay on the kitchen floor, and her cell phone was beneath the table.
“She’s gone,” I told Rios.
“Get back to your car. Do not touch anything.”
A new video reached Ethan’s phone. Ruth sat in a folding chair under a hanging work light. Her mouth was taped. Vanessa stood behind her, holding Emily’s blue folder.
“Bring the tag and the location of the ledger,” Vanessa said. “No police.”
Ethan lunged for his truck keys. I caught his arm.
“She wants us panicked,” I said. “We go with a plan.”
“That's our mother.”
“I know. I already lost a wife. I'm not losing you because we acted stupid.”
Rios assembled officers near the old ferry terminal. She refused to turn a hostage situation into a reckless charge. A negotiator called Vanessa while investigators checked cameras along the access road.
Lily stayed at Mrs. Alvarez’s house with an officer outside. I told her Grandma needed help and that I would explain more when I could.
“Are you coming back?” she asked.
I swallowed. “I'm doing everything I can.”
At the terminal, the negotiator persuaded Vanessa to release video proving Ruth was breathing and conscious. In the background, a horn sounded twice. Rios recognized it as the warning signal from a working freight crossing, nowhere near the abandoned ferry building.
“The video isn't live from where she says it is,” Rios told us.
Officers moved toward a second warehouse beside the tracks. I watched from the command vehicle, clutching Ethan’s hand the way I hadn't since we were kids.

A patrol officer radioed, “We have the female hostage in sight.”
Then we heard a gunshot.
