At 2:00 a.m., I found my housekeeper sitting on the pantry floor, eating cold leftovers from a dinner my guests had barely touched.

I almost walked past her.

Then I asked one question.

“When was the last time you ate?”

June looked down at the plate.

“Yesterday morning.”

That answer stopped me cold.

She worked inside my Lake Forest mansion every day. She was paid every Friday. At least, that was what I believed.

So I asked her how much she made.

When she told me the number, my blood ran cold.

“That’s impossible.”

My company records showed I was paying her more than twice that amount.

June stared at me, confused.

“The agency told me that was my salary.”

“What agency?”

“Blackwell Domestic Services.”

My company.

I pulled out my phone and opened payroll.

Her name appeared instantly.

So did the full amount my business had supposedly been paying her every month.

But June had never received most of it.

Someone had been stealing from her.

And not just from her.

When I checked the authorization at the bottom of the payroll file, I recognized the signature immediately.

It belonged to the man I trusted to run half my empire.

That was the moment I realized June wasn’t starving because she was underpaid.

She was starving because someone inside my own company had been stealing from my employees for years.
