Chapter 13 - THE THREAT FILE

The report against June was filed anonymously thirty minutes after the board suspended me.
It accused her of abandoning Lila and Micah, failing to provide food, and living in employer housing while sending her children elsewhere.
Every fact had been twisted from payroll records the company itself controlled.
June read the complaint twice.
'They stole my wages, then used the fact that I was broke against me.'
Claire's jaw tightened.
'Yes.'
A caseworker still had to visit.
That terrified June more than any executive.
'I can't lose them.'
'You won't,' I said.
She turned on me.
'Don't promise things you control even less than my paycheck.'
I stopped.
She was right.
Again.
The caseworker met June in Peoria, interviewed Lila and Micah, reviewed the wage evidence, and closed the emergency concern within forty-eight hours.
But the threat file changed the investigation.
This was no longer only wage theft.
It was retaliation.
Grace decoded more entries.
Employees who complained had been threatened with eviction, immigration consequences, custody reports, debt collection, or blacklisting.
Some threats were legal-looking letters.
Some were phone calls.
The system depended on one idea: workers would be too tired, too scared, or too poor to compare notes.
June started calling them.
Not as my employee.
As one of them.
By the end of the week, forty-seven workers agreed to testify.
By the next week, one hundred twelve.
Then June received a message from an unknown number.
STOP TALKING OR YOUR MOTHER LOSES HER APARTMENT.
We traced the building.
The mortgage belonged to a Blackwell property affiliate.
Natalie now controlled it.
I called her directly.
'Touch that lease and I bury you in court.'
She laughed.
'You don't have a company anymore.'
'No. But I still have your emails.'
Silence.
Then she said, 'You have no idea what your father signed.'
A minute later, Grace found the document.
It was a side letter dated thirteen years earlier.
My father's signature.

And one sentence that made everything worse:
EMPLOYEE RESERVES MAY BE USED TO SUPPORT BLACKWELL ACQUISITION LIQUIDITY.
