Chapter 16 - THE CAR IN THE GARAGE

June was not kidnapped.
She was trapped in the underground garage beneath Grace's building.
Victor Dane had blocked her car with an SUV and taken her phone.
He wanted fear, not a body.
That distinction did not make me calmer.
Police arrived before I did.
Victor surrendered after ten minutes.
June came out shaking with a cut on her palm from falling against a concrete wall.
Lila and Micah were safe in Peoria.
I did not touch June until she nodded that I could.
Then she said, 'I'm done being scared of people on your payroll.'
Victor gave Claire the last missing connection.
Natalie paid him through a consulting firm to monitor my house and identify who I was meeting after my suspension.
He had accessed pantry footage.
That was how Natalie knew June had become the center of the investigation.
The footage itself made me sick.
There was June on the pantry floor.
There was me standing over her.
There was the moment I opened payroll.
The entire scandal had begun under a camera owned by the same company stealing from her.
Claire asked June whether she still wanted to testify.
June looked at the screen.
'Yes.'
'You can step back.'
'No.'
She pointed to herself on the video.
'I spent years thinking being hungry meant I had failed my kids. I want them to hear whose failure it really was.'
Owen surrendered that afternoon.
His cooperation froze more Cedar House accounts.
Natalie's board support began collapsing.
But she still had one weapon.
A lender covenant triggered automatically if Blackwell Domestic Services admitted wage violations above ten million dollars.
The moment we formally disclosed the full twenty-three million, Cedar House could seize key collateral unless a judge stopped it.
Natalie scheduled the sale vote for Friday morning.
Claire scheduled the emergency injunction for Thursday afternoon.
Then Grace found something hidden in the ledger.
Natalie had moved six million dollars out of Cedar House that morning.
