Chapter 2 - TWO PAYCHECKS

I did not sleep.

At 2:17 a.m., June sat across from me at the kitchen table while I compared her bank deposits to company payroll records.

The numbers did not bend. They split cleanly in two.

Blackwell Domestic Services reported paying June $4,800 a month.

Her account received $2,260.

'Where is the rest?' I asked.

June slid a wrinkled pay statement toward me.

It listed deductions I had never approved: housing reserve, uniform care, placement protection, emergency insurance, agency administration.

'What's placement protection?'

'I asked once.'

'What did they say?'

'They said asking questions could affect my assignment.'

I looked up.

'Who said that?'

'Ms. Lowe in payroll.'

Patricia Lowe, director of workforce administration.

Another employee I had promoted.

I called my private controller, Grace Bell, and told her to come to the mansion without using company email.

She arrived at three.

By four, we had checked twelve randomly selected domestic workers.

Every one had the same problem.

The company recorded one wage.

The worker received another.

The difference disappeared into deductions with names designed to sound boring enough that nobody would look twice.

Grace went pale.

'This isn't a payroll error.'

'How long?'

'I need server access.'

June stood.

'I should go.'

'No.'

She flinched at my tone.

I softened it.

'You should not be alone tonight.'

She looked toward the window.

'If they find out I showed you my pay stub, I'll lose the job.'

'They work for me.'

June gave me a tired look.

'With respect, Mr. Blackwell, so do I. And I didn't know I was being robbed until you asked one question.'

That landed harder than any accusation.

At 5:12 a.m., Grace got into the archived payroll server.

She found a hidden export folder.

Inside were employee wage files going back six years.

At the top of each one was a column labeled COMPANY RATE.

Beside it was another.

WORKER RATE.

And beside that was a third column.

RETENTION.

The total at the bottom was $9,418,600.

Then Grace opened the authorization history.

Owen's name was everywhere.

May you like

But one file had a second signature.

Mine.
