Chapter 1 - The Cake Hits the Floor

The cake had not finished sliding off the table when Ethan Bennett slapped his little sister for the first time.
Six-year-old Lily had hurried past him to fix the birthday banner. Her shoulder clipped his arm. The three-tier chocolate cake tipped, spun, and landed frosting-first on the hardwood. Thirty guests watched candles scatter beneath their shoes.
Ethan stared at the wreckage. He had spent weeks talking about this party, insisting that the black-and-gold decorations and expensive cake would prove he was not a little kid anymore.
Then he grabbed Lily's wrist.
"Look what you did!"
"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I didn't see—"
His hand cracked across her cheek. Before anyone could move, he struck her again. Lily stumbled against the table, clutching her stuffed rabbit. A red mark rose on her face. The music stopped. One guest lifted a phone, then lowered it, ashamed to be recording.
"Ethan!" Sarah Bennett shouted from the doorway.
She had come straight from her hospital billing shift, still wearing navy office slacks and a pale blue blouse. The gift bag in her hand held the headphones she'd bought after skipping lunch for two weeks. It dropped as she rushed to Lily and pulled her behind her.
"Don't touch her again."
"She wrecked everything!" Ethan yelled.
"She's six. It was an accident."
"You always take her side!"
He stepped toward Sarah and raised his hand. She caught his wrist and shoved him back to stop the blow. He stumbled into the birthday table, sending flowers, gifts, plates, and candy crashing to the floor.
No one spoke.
Sarah held Lily close. "Everybody needs to leave. Now."
As the guests filed out, Ethan's phone vibrated beside a fallen party hat. Sarah saw four words before he snatched it away.

Mommy saved you again.
Ethan went white. For the first time that night, Sarah was more frightened by his silence than his anger.
