Chapter 14 - What Daniel Chose

Sarah and Ethan watched the footage again with the sound turned up. Beneath the crackle, Daniel's voice was clear.

"Both of you, out! Now!"

Mason stumbled through the garage door. Ethan followed, then turned back, shouting. Daniel grabbed his shoulders and shoved him toward the yard. Ethan fought to return. Daniel pointed at the street, fierce with fear, then disappeared into the smoke.

The video ended seconds later.

Ethan folded forward. For three years he had replayed his father's death as punishment: Dad went in because I was reckless. Dad died because I was stupid. Every birthday and school award felt stolen from a man who would never get another one.

"He didn't choose Mason over me," Ethan said. "He went back because Mason was still there. He was trying to save both of us."

"Yes," Sarah whispered. "That was who your father was."

Ethan wiped his face. "Why didn't you tell me?"

Sarah did not reach for an excuse. "I thought the truth would destroy you. I was grieving and scared. I made a choice for you that I had no right to make. I'm sorry."

He looked at her for a long time. "I don't know how to forgive you yet."

"You don't have to decide today."

For the first time, he didn't walk away.

They copied the footage and gave one drive to Officer Patel. She told them to stay away from Dean until she had spoken to him. Sarah also arranged an emergency counseling appointment for Ethan and a separate session for Lily.

That night, she placed Daniel's letter beside the birthday card. One warned them not to hide from truth; the other reminded Ethan that what came next mattered.

At 11:47 p.m., Dean sent another message.

Friday is not a request. If you don't come, I'll make the truth public myself.

Sarah looked at Ethan. "We won't hide. But we won't let him decide how we tell the truth, either."
