Chapter 10 - The Report That Never Named a Cause

Sarah and Ethan met retired Captain Alvarez, the investigator who had handled the fire. His office smelled of coffee and old paper. He opened the archived report and turned it toward them.

"The official finding was undetermined," he said. "We found evidence of consumer fireworks, but no one could confirm who handled them. You told us you believed the boys had been outside when the fire started."

Sarah folded her hands. "They were in the garage. I knew they had been experimenting with fireworks. I didn't tell you."

"Why now?"

"Someone is threatening my son with footage. And my silence has hurt another family."

Alvarez turned to Ethan. "You don't have to answer anything without a lawyer present. But being a child explains why you made a dangerous choice. It doesn't erase the choice, and it doesn't mean your life is over."

Ethan stared at the report. "Did my dad know?"

"He told a paramedic he thought the boys had been handling fireworks. He was focused on getting you both out. He didn't accuse you."

Ethan's shoulders shook. Sarah had never known Daniel said that. She had spent three years imagining his last thought was disappointment in their son.

Alvarez showed them the evidence inventory. The neighbor's first video had been logged, then returned to the homeowner because it did not show the ignition clearly. A later note said the homeowner had moved away.

"Her name was Mrs. Flores," Alvarez said, giving them the contact details he had. "If she kept a backup, it might explain what happened before the smoke blocked the camera."

Outside, Ethan stood beneath the courthouse awning, breathing hard.

"Dad knew it might have been us," he said. "And he still went back in."

Sarah let him stand without trying to fill the silence. Then his phone vibrated.

You found the report. Now find the boy who was there.
