Chapter 18 - Everyone Kept Evidence

Ryan's secret recordings were ugly, self-serving, and extremely useful.

He had recorded meetings with Vanessa because he never trusted her.

Vanessa had saved copies of his messages because she never trusted him.

Mark Ellison had kept payment records because he never trusted either of them.

Their entire partnership had been built on betrayal.

One recording captured Vanessa asking what would happen if I refused to sign the proxy.

Ryan answered, "Then we create enough chaos that nobody asks whether she signed it herself."

Another captured him telling her to provoke me before the board vote.

"I need her emotional," he said. "Not injured. Emotional."

Ryan had planned to destroy my credibility.

Vanessa had escalated the plan into physical violence.

Ryan then chose to protect himself instead of helping me.

Vanessa accepted a plea agreement that included prison time and required full cooperation in the fraud case.

Ryan refused every deal.

"He thinks he can beat it," Ortiz told me.

"Of course he does."

Three months passed.

My bruises faded.

My divorce moved forward.

The company audit uncovered eleven million dollars in attempted or completed self-dealing connected to Ryan and North Vale.

Then, at thirty-nine weeks and two days, my daughter decided she had waited long enough.

Labor began at four in the morning.

Maya drove me to St. Anne's while yelling at every red light like it had personally betrayed her.

Seven hours later, Dr. Patel placed a screaming baby girl on my chest.

I stared at her dark hair, furious little face, and perfect hands.

"Hi, Grace," I whispered.

She wrapped her fingers around mine.

Maya cried harder than the baby.

Then Dana arrived carrying a sealed court document.

"I'm sorry to bring business here."

"What is it?"

May you like

She smiled.

"Your divorce judgment. Signed this morning."
