Chapter 19 - The Verdict

Ryan's criminal trial began five months after Grace was born.

I testified for two days.

His lawyer tried to make our marriage the story.

Had we argued?

Yes.

Had I been angry when I found the affair?

Obviously.

Had I planned to leave?

Absolutely.

Then the prosecutor played the porch video.

The courtroom watched me fall.

Watched Vanessa come down after me.

Watched Ryan stand in the doorway and do nothing.

Then came his voice.

Get her phone before somebody comes.

No question about my temper could make that sentence disappear.

Vanessa testified next.

Mark Ellison after her.

Bank records, forged proxies, deleted messages, the hospital security footage, and the North Vale payments followed.

Ryan took the stand against his lawyer's advice.

He said he had been trying to save the company.

He said I was leaving during a fragile financial period.

He said Vanessa misunderstood him.

He said Ellison exceeded instructions.

He said everybody had betrayed him.

The prosecutor asked one final question.

"When your pregnant wife was lying at the bottom of those steps, what did you do first?"

Ryan stared at the jury.

"I assessed the situation."

I watched one juror's face harden.

Three days later, the verdicts came back.

Guilty on conspiracy related to evidence tampering and fraud.

Guilty on multiple financial counts.

Guilty on obstruction connected to the hospital attempt.

The jury did not convict him of ordering the physical assault, because the evidence did not prove that beyond a reasonable doubt.

I was glad the verdict stayed honest.

Vanessa had pushed me.

Ryan had built the trap around us.

Both truths mattered.

At sentencing, Ryan turned toward me.

"Emily."

I didn't answer.

Grace was at home with Maya.

My future was somewhere outside that courtroom.

Ryan's was being decided inside it.

The judge began to speak.

And for the first time in years, I realized I didn't need to hear every word.
