Chapter 9 - What Didn't Burn

Police sifted the fire pit for three hours.
They found melted plastic, ash, and the warped metal shell of a microSD card.
Ryan had burned the recording.
Or tried to.
The manufacturer confirmed the card itself was too damaged to recover.
I thought our best witness was gone.
Then the gardener, Luis Mendoza, asked to speak with Ortiz.
"The cameras fail sometimes," he said. "Mr. Ryan gets angry when the gate misses deliveries, so last winter I installed a cheap trail camera near the hedges. It watches the driveway and front lawn."
"Does Ryan know?"
Luis shook his head.
"I paid for it myself. It helps me see deer before they eat the roses."
Maya actually laughed.
For the first time in two days, I did too.
The trail camera didn't show the top of the steps.
But it showed the lower half.
It captured me falling into frame.
It captured Vanessa coming down after me.
And it captured something else.
A figure standing inside the open front doorway.
Ryan.
He had been there before Maya arrived.
He had watched Vanessa crouch beside me.
He had waited nineteen seconds before stepping outside.
Nineteen seconds while I begged our daughter to move.
Nineteen seconds while Vanessa whispered to me.
Nineteen seconds before my husband chose which story he planned to tell.
Ortiz paused the footage.
"This doesn't prove he saw the shove," she said. "But it destroys his statement that he came downstairs after hearing the commotion."
Dana leaned toward the screen.
"Go back."
Ortiz did.
"There. In his right hand."
The image was blurry.
Ryan was holding a phone.
On the screen was an open security app.
Ortiz zoomed as far as she could.
The timestamp read 2:22 p.m.
One minute before I fell.
Then her phone buzzed.
A forensic analyst had recovered deleted messages from Ryan's tablet.
May you like
One had been sent to Vanessa at 2:21.
DON'T LET HER LEAVE WITH THAT PHONE.
