Chapter 11 - The Bracelet Nobody Stole

Police came to Rose's temporary apartment with a question she never expected: had she taken Victoria's diamond bracelet on the wedding night?

"It's worth eighty thousand dollars," the officer said. "Mrs. Callaway says it vanished during the emergency."

Rose stared at him. "I was hanging onto a woman who was falling off a roof. I wasn't shopping for jewelry."

Detective Torres, standing behind the officer, asked to see Rose's hands. The scrapes were healing, but the skin across her knuckles was still raw.

"Did you notice a bracelet?" Torres asked.

"Victoria wore one. Silver, with little square stones. She had it on when she walked toward Eleanor."

The officer showed her a picture of the missing piece. It was the same bracelet. Rose had been too frightened to remember it until that moment.

Hotel staff had found an empty velvet jewelry box inside Rose's old locker. Blake claimed that proved theft. Rose reminded Torres that her locker remained at the hotel after she was fired and multiple supervisors had keys.

"I didn't put a box there."

"We're checking every person who had access," Torres said. "You're not under arrest."

By evening, a search of the hotel's service-camera footage showed a wedding assistant entering the staff room after Rose had left. She carried a small velvet box.

Blake's story collapsed. Victoria's lawyer backed away from the accusation without apologizing.

Eleanor watched in disbelief.

"They nearly killed me, and now they're accusing the woman who caught me of stealing?"

Amelia advised her not to contact Victoria. Nathaniel agreed, though every muscle in his face looked ready for a fight.

Rose remembered one more detail. When she'd caught Eleanor, something hard had scratched her palm through the fabric. She'd thought it was a jacket clasp.

She called Torres and described it.

The detective checked the evidence inventory from the rooftop. In the torn seam of Eleanor's jacket, investigators had recovered a broken silver fastening with a tiny square setting.

It matched Victoria's missing bracelet.
