Chapter 14 - The Man Who Opened the Door

Connor Voss was found in a rented room near Newark Airport. He'd been preparing to leave the country for an assignment no employer could confirm.
Torres interviewed him with his attorney present. At first, Connor insisted the cameras had been shut down for privacy, a normal request at expensive weddings.
Then she showed him the signed work order. The order was created after the cameras were disabled and backdated to the morning of the ceremony.
"Who told you to change the time?" Torres asked.
Connor stared at the table. "Miles Harker."
He explained that Miles had paid him a bonus to disable the rooftop recording system and keep the east service door unlocked for Victoria's private conversation with Eleanor. Connor said he did not know she intended to use force.
"If you knew nothing was going to happen," Torres asked, "why remove the recording?"
"Because Miles said the mother-in-law was going to make a scene. He wanted no footage that could embarrass the family."
Torres let the silence sit.
Finally Connor said, "After the fall, Miles told me to wipe the administrator log. I refused at first. He said I'd lose every contract I had."
The account history showed he'd attempted to erase the record but had failed to remove a backup held by the hotel vendor.
Amelia presented the growing evidence to the foundation board. Clara West, who had previously accepted Miles's reassurances, called for his suspension.
Miles responded by accusing Nathaniel of putting a personal scandal ahead of the company's survival.
"Your marriage is a disaster," Miles said in the boardroom. "That doesn't give you the right to destroy our financing."
Nathaniel laid the unauthorized credit pledge on the table.
"You used my credentials to secure a deal I rejected. That's not financing. That's betrayal."
Miles glanced toward the door, where two company investigators stood ready to collect his devices.

His phone buzzed. He read the screen and smiled without humor.
"You're too late," he said. "The sale agreement has already been sent to the buyer for closing."
