Chapter 12 - A Father Under Oath

When Ethan met Detective Shah again, he finally stopped blaming his mother's temper for the investigation.
"I saw Vanessa hit Lily before Christmas," he admitted. "Not every day. But more than once. I told myself it wasn't serious because there weren't always marks."
"And when Lily asked for help?"
"I told her to behave."
He covered his face. Shah let the silence sit between them.
"I was afraid Noah would lose his mother," he said eventually.
"Lily was afraid she'd lose everyone," Shah replied.
Ethan gave investigators access to his email, banking records, and messages from Vanessa and Paige. He also admitted that he had told my relatives I was overreacting after Lily showed up with an unexplained bruise months earlier.
At the hearing, the judge reviewed reports about the children's condition, the financial records, and the disputed recordings. I answered every question about my use of force. I said I'd grabbed Vanessa and struck her once to stop the immediate harm, then pushed Ethan away when he advanced toward me. I did not claim I'd acted perfectly. I described what I had seen.
Vanessa's lawyer suggested I wanted the children so I could control Grace's money. My cheeks burned, but Carla stood and asked for evidence of that allegation. None was offered.
The judge maintained the protective placement and ordered continued professional assessment. Ethan's contact would be supervised while the investigation continued.
Outside the courthouse, he waited beside my car.
"Can I tell Lily I'm sorry?"
"You can ask the worker when it's appropriate. You don't get to make her comfort you."
He nodded, tears in his eyes.
That evening Shah called with the result of a forensic review. They had recovered an erased recording from the hallway camera.
It showed Vanessa speaking to Paige about a deadline.

"If we don't get Lily out by Friday," Vanessa said, "the trustee gets the quarterly statement."
The trustee was me.
