Chapter 8 - The Locked Room

With a warrant, Shah's team opened the upstairs room Vanessa had kept locked. It wasn't a dungeon. That would have been easier to recognize.
It looked like an ordinary guest bedroom prepared for a visitor: clean sheets, a small desk, folded towels, and a cardboard box of brightly colored toys.
Under the bed they found forms from a private residential program. None bore an official admission stamp. There were photographs of Lily in different corners of the house, each with a handwritten caption: NONCOMPLIANT. DEFIANT. UNSAFE WITH INFANT.
One photo showed Lily asleep beside Noah's playpen. Vanessa had labeled it NEGLECT OF SUPERVISION.
Shah showed the documents to Tessa, who said, "They were building a record to justify removing a four-year-old from her family."
The investigators also found a key ring marked C, H, and P. A child-sized cot in the walk-in closet had a blanket stuffed beneath it. Her trained interviewer would ask what she safely could.
At home, I watched Lily eat a peach at my kitchen table. She kept trying to give half of it to Noah. I finally told her there were enough peaches for both of them.
"Really?" she asked, surprised.
"Really."
That night Tessa called. She had spoken with a neighbor who remembered seeing a dark van parked at Ethan's house after midnight. The driver had carried paperwork inside, then left with Paige.
"Do you have a name?" I asked.
"A company on the van: Northbridge Youth Transition."
Carla searched the name. Northbridge was a real service with a real license, but its director had never heard of Lily. Someone had created a false referral using its logo.
