Chapter 15 - The Message from Daddy

Ethan had told Shah he didn't know the cameras existed. The newly recovered emails showed that he had asked Vanessa months earlier to "keep an eye on Lily" when he worked late. He believed that meant an ordinary baby monitor.

One message was harder to explain.

Vanessa had sent him a short clip of Lily crying over a spilled drink. Ethan replied: SHE NEEDS TO LEARN. DON'T LET MOM INTERFERE.

He read his own words in the interview room and began to shake.

"I thought she was having a tantrum," he said.

"You didn't ask why she was crying," Shah answered.

"No."

There was no dramatic confession that could redeem him. There was a long trail of small refusals. He'd heard a frightened child and decided that hearing was the same as helping.

When Tessa told me the relevant findings, I sat outside beneath the bare maple tree until my hands were warm again. I had raised a man who could make a little girl feel alone in a crowded house. That was a grief I couldn't put anywhere.

Noah took his first confident steps across my living room that evening. Lily cheered so loudly he sat down in surprise, then laughed. I laughed, too. For one whole minute nobody talked about cameras or lawyers or signatures.

A few days later a woman named Olivia Grant contacted Carla. She had once worked as a scheduling assistant for Paige. She said the program's "home visits" were invented in batches to match bank deposits.

"I quit when I saw they were using actual children in the reports," she said. "I kept copies because I was scared."

She brought a thumb drive and a notebook.

At the last page, she had circled a date in red. It was the day after Christmas.

Beside it she had written: EMERGENCY TRANSFER OF LILY AND NOAH - NOTIFICATION WITHHELD.
