Chapter 13 - THE UNEDITED VERSIONS
The unedited videos destroyed Ryan’s story.
The “passed out” clip showed a fever. The “screaming at Emma” clip showed her running toward traffic. The broken plate slipped while I washed dishes.
Every accusation had been built by cutting away the truth.
But the last file was different.
It was security footage from Margaret’s kitchen.
Ryan and Margaret sat at the table with Alan Price.
The audio was clear.
Margaret: “Once the emergency order is signed, Lauren can fight later.”
Ryan: “And Emma?”
Alan: “She stays with you while the court sorts it out.”
Margaret: “Long enough.”
Ryan: “Long enough for what?”
Margaret leaned toward him.
“For the audit to pass without her interfering.”
I stopped the video.
Mom covered her mouth.
Alan discussed moving money before the trust auditor connected it to Ryan.
Then Margaret said, “If Lauren gets emotional, use it. If Diane interferes, make her look confused.”
Mom whispered, “Confused?”
Alan answered on the recording.
“At seventy, cognitive concerns are easy to raise.”
They had a plan for her too.
I wanted to throw the laptop.
Priya copied everything to three secure locations.
“Anger later. Evidence now.”
By afternoon, investigators obtained a warrant for Ryan’s office.
They found forged drafts of my signature.
Copies of Mom’s insurance card.
School forms.
Trust documents.
And a small notebook in Margaret’s handwriting.
One page listed goals: EMERGENCY CUSTODY. REMOVE LAUREN. FREEZE ACCESS. CONTROL EMMA TRUST. RESOLVE STOWE.
At the bottom:
DIANE = PROBLEM.
Mom read that line twice.
Then she walked into the bathroom and locked the door.
I followed.
“Mom?”
Her voice came through the door.
“I thought she hated me.”
“She did.”
“No, Lauren. This is worse.”
The door opened.
Mom’s face was wet.
“She didn’t hate me. She was afraid of me.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew something about Ryan before you married him.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
May you like
She took a shaky breath.
“Your father wasn’t the first person Ryan stole from.”
