Chapter 2 - THE ENVELOPE

Two police officers entered to find my mother bleeding, Margaret screaming, Ryan hunched beside the couch, and me holding forged custody papers.

It was not a good room to explain quickly.

Officer Jensen separated us while Morales knelt beside Mom.

“Who hurt you?”

Mom pointed at Margaret. “She dragged me by my hair because I found those.”

Margaret shrieked, “She broke into my private things!”

“Inside my house?” I asked.

Ryan snapped, “It’s our house.”

The deed was mine. He knew it.

Officer Jensen studied the signature.

“Did you sign this?”

“No.”

“Recognize the attorney?”

Alan Price—Ryan’s college friend and company lawyer.

Mom pulled a second sheet from the envelope.

It was worse.

A typed declaration claimed I neglected Emma, abused medication, and had “unstable episodes.”

None of it was true.

The witnesses were Margaret and Ryan.

I looked at my husband.

“You told a lawyer I was dangerous?”

Ryan glanced toward the officers. “It was a draft.”

“A draft of a lie.”

Margaret crossed her arms. “You’ve been exhausted. Emotional. People notice.”

I almost laughed.

“People?”

Then Emma’s bedroom door opened upstairs.

My six-year-old daughter appeared on the landing in dinosaur pajamas, clutching her stuffed fox.

“Mommy?”

Every adult in the room froze.

I moved toward the stairs.

“Go back to bed,” Margaret said.

Emma flinched from her.

Officer Morales noticed.

I held Emma.

“Grandma said I might have to live with her,” she whispered.

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

Below us, Ryan closed his eyes.

I looked over the railing.

He knew.

Officer Jensen told Ryan and Margaret to turn around.

Margaret shouted.

Ryan argued.

Handcuffs clicked.

Mom stood beside the scattered pages, shaking.

Then Emma whispered something else.

“Daddy made me practice what to say.”

I held her tighter.

“What did he make you practice?”

May you like

She looked at the officers downstairs.

“If somebody asked whether you scare me.”
