Chapter 17 - THE TRANSFER

The transfer failed because the title company flagged my forged electronic signature.
For once, a system worked before we were hurt.
The request came from a motel near O’Hare.
Police found Margaret inside with Alan Price’s younger brother, Stephen.
Margaret surrendered after twenty-three minutes.
No chase. No gun.
Just Margaret beside a laptop full of stolen identities.
Her booking photo showed fury, not shame.
Margaret did not think she had done evil.
She thought she had lost.
The state charged Margaret with assault, forgery, identity theft, conspiracy, intimidation, and attempted fraud. Alan faced his own list.
Ryan’s cooperation did not erase what he had done.
Three weeks later, Ryan sat across from me at the custody hearing.
Emma was not there.
Priya presented the forgeries, staged-house recording, unedited videos, planted medication, and Ryan’s admissions.
His lawyer asked only for supervised visitation.
The judge looked exhausted.
“So this court is being asked to determine whether a father who participated in manufacturing evidence against the child’s mother can presently exercise unsupervised parenting time.”
Ryan stared at the table.
The answer was no.
Supervised visits only. No trust access, school pickup, or direct contact outside a parenting app.
Victory did not feel warm.
It felt like surviving a crash and realizing your family drove the other car.
Outside court, Ryan asked for one minute.
Priya said I could walk away.
I almost did.
Then I stopped.
Ryan said, “I never wanted Mom to hurt Diane.”
“You watched.”
“I froze.”
“No. You chose.”
His eyes filled.
“I love Emma.”
“I believe you.”
He looked surprised.
I continued.
“But love without safety is not enough.”
He lowered his head.
Then he whispered, “There’s one thing I didn’t tell the prosecutor.”
My body went cold.
May you like
“What?”
“Your father recorded me.”
