Chapter 18 - THE RECORDING

Marcus found the recording behind a loose wall panel at Stowe.
Dad had dated it four years before his death.
I listened alone.
Ryan’s voice came first.
“You think I’m using Lauren.”
Dad answered.
“I think you love what she makes possible.”
“You don’t know me.”
“I know you used her credit without telling her.”
Silence.
Then Ryan said, “I fixed it.”
Dad replied, “You hid it.”
Then Dad said something I will never forget.
“If you ever make my daughter question her own sanity so you can take what belongs to her, I will leave her a road back to the truth.”
That was why the folders existed.
Not because Dad wanted to control my marriage.
Because he feared I might one day need proof that my memory was real.
I cried.
Then Dad’s voice softened.
“Ryan, you can still become a better man. But first you have to stop letting your mother rescue you from consequences.”
Ryan said, “You don’t understand her.”
Dad answered, “I understand exactly what she taught you. That love means never letting you fall. She was wrong. Sometimes love is letting the ground teach what people could not.”
The recording ended.
Ryan had spent his life being rescued.
I had been protected by silence.
Neither made us stronger.
Mom and I went to Peter Walsh’s grave.
She apologized to him out loud.
Then she apologized to me again.
This time I did not say it was okay.
I said, “I forgive you, but I need time.”
She nodded.
“That’s fair.”
It was the most honest thing either of us had said in years.
That night Emma drew our family—me, her, Mom, Kate, a giant orange fox, and Ryan alone at a table.
“Is Daddy still family?” she asked.
I sat beside her.
“Yes.”
“Even when he did bad things?”
“Yes.”
“Does that mean he gets to come home?”
“No.”
She thought about that.
Then smiled a little.
“Okay.”
My phone buzzed.
A message from Priya.
MARGARET WANTS TO SEE YOU BEFORE SENTENCING.
I stared at it.
May you like
Then another message came.
SHE SAYS SHE HAS SOMETHING YOUR FATHER NEVER FOUND.
