Chapter 19 - The Decision at the Workshop

On Monday I gathered every employee who could attend in the workshop.

There were welders with scarred hands, office staff holding notebooks, and apprentices who looked terrified they'd chosen the wrong career.

"I've made a terrible mistake," I began. "I let people into this company because I trusted them personally. I didn't check what they were doing professionally."

Nobody spoke.

"You deserve better. I won't promise that everything is fine. It isn't. But I will not use Oliver's money to save us. That's his future, not mine."

Samir stood up.

"What do you need?"

"Time. Transparent books. And your permission to rebuild this place the right way."

The response wasn't a standing ovation. It was better. Workers came forward with ideas: delayed equipment upgrades, new bids, shared overtime, customers who might return if we documented our finances honestly.

A few people left. I didn't blame them.

In the weeks that followed, the bank concluded its preliminary review found significant signs of forged authorizations and kept the disputed loan on hold. Investigators referred related evidence for possible criminal charges.

Miles and Celeste each retained separate lawyers. Patrick admitted his role and agreed to cooperate. Nothing was resolved overnight.

The mill remained in Oliver's trust. Our company survived by shrinking, borrowing legitimately against my own assets, and winning two smaller municipal contracts.

One afternoon Iris sent me the last unreleased wedding photograph.

It showed Oliver running toward me before Celeste stepped into his path. His face was bright with trust.

I printed it and put it in a drawer, not because I wanted him to remember the disaster, but because I needed to remember who I was supposed to be watching.

That evening Elena arrived carrying an old recipe box from Hannah's kitchen.

Inside was a card in Hannah's handwriting: OLIVER'S FIFTH BIRTHDAY CAKE.

At the bottom she'd written a note for me.

If I'm not there, make a mess together. Let him lick the spoon.
