Chapter 5 - The Man Behind the Ledger

I knew the voice before Iris said the name.

Patrick Sloane had handled payroll at Mercer Build for eleven years. He'd stood beside me when Hannah was dying. He had visited our kitchen carrying lasagna.

"Just get the original signed," Patrick said on the recording. "The bank won't accept another copy."

I listened three times.

Each replay felt like losing a different memory.

Patrick finally returned my call at eleven.

"Daniel. I'm so sorry about the wedding."

"Tell me about North Quay Partners."

His breath caught.

"What?"

"Tell me why Miles is trying to use Oliver's property to guarantee his debt."

"You don't understand how development financing works."

"I understand a forged signature."

He said nothing.

I told him to stay away from our systems until outside counsel reviewed the records. Then I hung up before he could talk me into doubting what I'd heard.

By noon, Celeste's version of the wedding was everywhere online.

A carefully cropped video showed me catching her arms and her falling into the cake table. It omitted what she'd done to Oliver.

Her caption claimed I had attacked her during a disagreement about parenting.

A local gossip account called me an unstable widower.

Rebecca called, furious.

"They're saying you hurt her."

"Iris has the whole recording."

"Then release it."

"Not before Judith checks what can be shared without exposing Oliver to more attention."

At three, Oliver's preschool director called.

A woman had tried to collect him using a pickup authorization bearing my electronic signature.

The teacher refused because the woman wasn't on the approved list.

The name on the authorization was not Celeste Vaughn.

It was someone I hadn't seen since Hannah's funeral.

Her estranged brother, Owen.
