Chapter 6 - Someone at the Preschool Gate

Owen Alvarez stood outside the preschool gate in a navy coat, shaking so hard he spilled his coffee.
Hannah hadn't spoken to him in years. He used to borrow money and disappear before anyone could ask for repayment.
"Why are you here?" I demanded.
"They told me you approved it."
"Who?"
"Celeste. She said Oliver needed a few quiet days away from all the wedding news."
"And you thought I'd arrange that without calling me?"
Owen looked ashamed.
"They offered me eight thousand dollars."
My anger took a different shape.
"You were going to take a four-year-old child for money?"
"I wasn't going to hurt him."
"You were going to scare him out of his mind."
Owen stared at his shoes.
He handed me a printout showing where he had been told to drive: a rented house across the Connecticut line.
Beside the address someone had handwritten a note: NO PHONE CONTACT UNTIL SIGNING.
I photographed the page before Owen took a step backward.
"I'll talk to your attorney," he said. "I won't disappear."
That evening, I sat at Oliver's kitchen table with washable markers and let him tell me about his day.
He drew a fox, a blue house, and two people holding hands.
"Is that us?" I asked.
"It's us now," he said. "Can you promise I don't have to go to the green house?"
"I promise you won't be sent away because somebody wants money."
He nodded without smiling.
At nine, Judith called with a worse discovery.
The first forged authorization hadn't been filed after the engagement.
May you like
It had been prepared nine months earlier.
Two months before Celeste and I had even met.
