Chapter 18 - What Pike Knew

Deputy Chief Pike met investigators in a federal building, with his attorney beside him. He admitted that he had approved the access request that exposed Mom's address, but claimed he thought the request was legitimate.

"Who asked for it?" Investigator Brooks asked.

Pike looked at his hands. "Peter Lang."

"Why?"

"He said Sarah had stolen company property and might be hiding evidence. He told me the order was outdated."

Arthur leaned forward. "You knew she was under protection."

Pike didn't answer.

He explained that Lang had promised a donation to a police foundation and said the request would help resolve a civil dispute. Pike had signed it without checking the case file.

"That was enough to put a child in danger," Brooks said.

Pike nodded, looking sick. He then gave them the name of a former company accountant who had helped route payments through Bellmark. The accountant had kept copies of the invoices and was willing to testify if the state protected his family.

The money trail was finally opening.

That evening, Mom and I sat on the porch of the safe house. The air smelled of wet grass, and for the first time in weeks, there were no voices arguing inside.

"Do you think Dad will go to prison?" I asked.

"I don't know," Mom said. "But I know what happened to us won't be erased just because he says sorry."

I leaned against her shoulder.

"I don't want to be scared every time a car slows down."

"You won't always feel this way."

"How do you know?"

"Because we're getting help. Because we're telling the truth. And because you called when I couldn't."

She kissed my forehead.

Before we went inside, a black sedan passed slowly along the road.

It didn't stop.

But the driver lifted one hand from the wheel and waved.

Arthur saw it too.

He called the guards, and they moved us inside.

The license plate belonged to a car registered to Peter Lang.
