Chapter 7 - The Place Beneath the Stairs

Mom told us the original ledger had been split into three pieces. One was a paper record of the fake invoices. One was a digital drive containing payment trails. The last was a small notebook with the names of the people who approved the false inspections before the warehouse fire.
"I hid them separately," she said. "If one was found, the others could still prove what happened."
"Where?" Arthur asked.
Mom shook her head. "I can't say in this room."
I stared at her. "Mom, we can trust Grandpa."
"I know. But if someone leaked our address once, they could be listening now."
Arthur checked the room for anything unfamiliar. He didn't find a device, but he called the hospital's security supervisor and requested a sweep of the hallway and adjoining rooms.
That evening, Mom finally told me one piece of the secret. When we had lived in the old house, she had taped a small envelope behind the removable panel beneath the staircase. Inside was a key and a note in her handwriting.
"If anything happens to me," she said, "you were supposed to give it to Arthur."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I hoped we'd never need it."
Arthur arranged for a trusted officer to retrieve the envelope from the old house. The officer called forty minutes later. The panel was open, and the envelope was gone.
Dad had been in custody all day. He couldn't have taken it himself.
Arthur looked at Investigator Brooks.
"Someone knew where it was."
Mom turned pale.

Then my phone buzzed. It was an unknown number, and the message contained only six words:
YOUR GRANDFATHER CAN'T PROTECT YOU FOREVER.
